Glossary

Agriculture - the science or practice of farming, including cultivation of the soil for the growing of crops and the rearing of animals to provide food, wool, and other products

Anthropogenic - of, relating to, or resulting from the influence of human beings on nature

​

Appendix I of CITES - Appendix I includes species threatened with extinction

​

Appropriate - take (something) for one's own use, typically without the owner's permission

​

Biodiversity - biological diversity in an environment as indicated by numbers of different species of plants and animals

 

Biome - a large naturally occurring community of flora and fauna occupying a major habitat

 

Boycott - withdraw from commercial or social relations with (a country, organization, or person) as a punishment or protest

 

Climate -  physical properties of the troposphere of an area based on analysis of its weather records over a long period of time

 

Colony - A group of bats

 

Conserve - to keep in a safe or sound state; to avoid wasteful or destructive use of

 

Deforestation - the action or process of clearing of forests

 

Degrade - break down or deteriorate chemically

 

Diet - the kinds of food that a person, animal, or community habitually eats

 

Disturbance - the interruption of a settled and peaceful condition

 

Diversity - an instance of being composed of differing elements or qualities : an instance of being diverse

 

Ecology - a branch of science concerned with the interrelationship of organisms and their environments

 

Economy -the wealth and resources of a country or region, especially in terms of the production and consumption of goods and services

Ecosystem - the complex of a community of organisms and its environment functioning as an ecological unit

 

Ecotourism - tourism directed toward exotic, often threatened, natural environments, especially to support conservation efforts and observe wildlife

 

Endangered - (of a species) seriously at risk of extinction

 

Endemic - belonging or native to a particular people or country

 

Environment -the surroundings or conditions in which a person, animal, or plant lives or operates.

 

Extinction - complete disappearance of a species from the earth due to the species not being able to adapt and successfully reproduce under new environmental conditions

 

Guano - the excrement of seabirds and bats, used as fertilizer

 

Habitat - the place or environment where a plant or animal naturally or normally lives and grows

 

Imported - bring (goods or services) into a country from abroad for sale

 

Indigenous - originating or occurring naturally in a particular place; native

 

Insurgent - a rebel or revolutionary

 

Marginalization - treatment of a person, group, or concept as insignificant or peripheral

 

Mining - the process or industry of obtaining coal or other minerals from a mine

 

Old-Growth/Primary Forest - a forest that had attained great age without significant disturbance

 

Petition - a formal written request, typically one signed by many people, appealing to authority with respect to a particular cause

 

Philippine Wildlife Act - An act to promote animal welfare in the philippines

 

Plantations - a usually large group of plants and especially trees under cultivation

 

Poaching - one that trespasses or steals; one who kills or takes wild animals illegally

 

Population - A group of organisms of one species that interbreed and live in the same place at the same time

 

Rainforest - a luxuriant, dense forest rich in biodiversity, found typically in tropical areas with consistently heavy rainfall

 

Regulate - control or maintain the rate or speed of (a machine or process) so that it operates properly

 

Roosting - a support on which bats rest

 

Rural - in, relating to, or characteristic of the countryside rather than the town

 

Secondary Forest - a forest or woodland area which has regrown after a timber harvest, until a long enough period has passed so that the effects of the disturbance are no longer evident

 

Slash-and-burn - relating to or denoting a method of agriculture in which existing vegetation is cut down and burned off before new seeds are sown, typically used as a method for clearing forest land for farming

 

Stigma - a mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person.

 

Sustainable - the ability to be sustained, supported, upheld, or confirmed;  the quality of not being harmful to the environment or depleting natural resources, and thereby supporting long-term ecological balance

 

Swaths - a broad strip or area of something

 

Timber - wood prepared for use in building and carpentry

 

Tropical - of, typical of, or peculiar to the tropics

 

Typhoon - a tropical storm in the region of the Indian or western Pacific oceans

 

Undernutrition - lack of proper nutrition, caused by not having enough food or not eating enough food containing substances necessary for growth and health.

 

Vegetation - plants considered collectively, especially those found in a particular area or habitat
