NGO Efforts

Non-Profits that are Trying to Make a Difference

All of the following organizations have programs that are trying to help the golden-capped fruit bat. You can help these organizations to continue studying and conserving this species by volunteering or donating to any of them.

  • Bat Conservation International (BCI)

BCI works internationally to conserve bat species. They have conservation programs in Asia, Africa, Latin America, North America, and Oceania. They try to combat many issues such as deforestation, roost site disturbances, and poaching.

  • The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS)

The goal of WCS is to preserve the world’s biodiversity, species, and habitats. They plan to do this through “science, conservation action, education, and inspiring people to value nature.” One of their priority locations is the Southeast Asian Archipelago, which includes the Philippines. Their goals in this area is to address deforestation, illegal pet trade, and raising awareness by engaging society and media. All of these things will help the golden-capped fruit bat directly.

  • The Lubee Bat Conservancy

Lubee has multiple different programs that they have implemented in the Philippines, with a priority on large flying foxes like the golden-capped fruit bat. They have captive breeding programs, they train managers of protected areas, and they verify and protect golden-capped fruit bat roosting sites.

  • The Philippine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. (PBCFI)

The Philippine Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. (PBCFI) is the organization that helped the Mambukal Resort to practice good ecotourism. They also provide students at local universities with training in field research techniques. They conduct surveys of bat populations, which is something that not many people are doing but is very important. They conduct a lot of outreach and education programs and also have a program where they provide posters of endemic bats. These posters help to educate Filipinos about the endemic bat species in the Philippines, and it also helps to counteract the unwarranted fear of bats that many people have.
